Trees seem to be one of the few easy things to draw. However, if you don't know anything about drawing, it might be too simple.
Your job as an artist is to draw what we see, not what we know. Drawing trees can be a great exercise for developing this skill!
There are over three trillion trees on earth, each with its own unique character and appearance, so it's no surprise that trees are among the most common and beautiful drawing subjects.
You will be surprised how easy it is to draw a realistic tree. Try it and see for yourself.
Start with a few main lines to indicate the general shape and guide the direction of the branches of the tree.
Pen and ink will also work well with this method, but you may want to save your watercolors or colored pencils for later in the process.
In their most basic form, trees are cylindrical shapes. Draw cylindrical shapes along your structural lines to fill in the roots, trunk, and main branches for a more 3D look.
It is always helpful to look at real trees to understand how branches work. Generally, with branches, you will find the trunk of the tree thicker and more tapered the higher you go up the branches of the tree.
Draw a rough outline of your tree's foliage, also called the treetop. Introduce jitter or ripples into your lines. This will give your tree a little more natural look.
You don't necessarily need to draw individual leaves to make your tree realistic. Be sure to vary the weight of your strokes as you go.
On a new layer, trace the final outline of the tree with a thicker black pen or marker. It is also important to vary the thickness of the line on the trunk.
Be sure to trace your lines down to the trunk shape you described; their placement will help suggest and define the shape without drawing the design too much.
Shade your tree to give it dimension. As a general rule, the branches closest to the trunk will be in the shade, while the branches at the top of the tree will be more exposed to light.
You can also complete your shading and highlights with a light source in mind for more directional detail work. If you're not sure you're getting enough contrast, squint and look at your sketch.
It's like having a conversation with your drawing. Add the finishing touches to the trunk, roots or surrounding soil and your tree is complete.
