Drawing fur from the imagination can be very frustrating. You've seen it, you know what it is, but when you try to draw it, you end up with a pile of straw.

First clue? You must draw what you see, not what you know!

Start with a bit of theory. You'll be better at drawing fur in pencil just by learning these simple facts!

First, the coat is made up of overlapping hairs, creating a smooth surface. However, when the surface they are on is bent, they begin to clump together: individual hairs clump together.

This "clumping" can occur in any dimension, creating "waves" of hair or small separate strands.

We see everything because of the contrast between light and shadow. The larger the groups, the larger the shadow between them.

When you draw skin by drawing individual hairs, what you are actually drawing is skin lit from below, with the hairs blocking the light. That's why it looks so weird!

So the big secret is this: to draw convincing fur with a pencil, you don't need to draw the hairs or wisps, but the shadows between them.

In fact, that's how you should always approach drawing. We draw lights and shadows, and nothing else. A single hair may look like a single pencil stroke, but you can't draw fur by drawing multiple single strokes!

Short hair obeys the same rules as long hair. After all, it does not matter how long the fur is, but how long it is relative to the surface on which it lies.

The smaller the surface, the more it bends and the more lumps there are. The bigger it is, the more uniform the hair.

In a drawing or any other 2D art form, the artist creates the illusion of realistic texture. This type of texture is called "simulated texture".

The simulated texture appearance in a drawing is created by manipulating another element, value. Value is the darkness or lightness of a color.

The arrangement of dark values (shades) and light values (tints) is what ultimately leads to the illusion of realistic texture in a drawing.
